‘Mama, This Instant in Action’ (2022) is part of Ackermann’s recent Mama series, whereby lines and gestures, figures and motifs rise to the surface only to dissolve and reappear elsewhere again. Here, a complex layering of visual language oscillates between abstraction and figuration into a subconscious unfolding of form– concealed deeply in the abstraction of the omnipresence. In the artist’s words: "Things can be freer and rise higher when they conceal themselves."
Ackermann’s work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at the following institutions: Malmö Konsthall, Malmö, Sweden; Sammlung Friedrichshof, Burgenland, Austria; Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami; Ludwig Museum, Budapest; The Swiss Institute, New York; and The Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas. Ackermann's work is held in prominent public collections including; The Museum of Modern Art, NY; The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; The Dallas Museum of Art, TX; The Maria Leuff Foundation, NY; The Hessel Foundation, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, FL; The Zabludowicz Collection, UK; Museum Het Domein, NL; and The Museum of Contemporary Art, LA.
About the artist
Born in Hungary and based in New York, Rita Ackermann attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest before emigrating to the United States in the early 1990s. Ackermann often starts by freely drawing onto raw canvas—in a similar technique to the automatic drawings of the Dadaists—only to later obscure the lines with layers of oil paint.Portrait of Rita Ackermann © Rita Ackermann
